Legal Question in Criminal Law in Texas

On the run

I have a friend on the run. He was accused of stealing a hotel safe along with two other guys. The other guys were convicted and sent to prison. My friend went into hiding for a couple of years mostly being homeless. I have heard from him only on two occassions and I don't know where he was at or doing except that he was homeless and used a calling card and a pay phone. My question is if he turns himself in can he get any kind of leniancy? My friend has a background. When he was 13 or 14 he was molested by his brother-in-law. The brother-in-law was convicted and sent to prison. It's a prison nearest to the town my friend lived at. Anyway, I think he's affraid to be sent to the same prison that his ex brother-in-law is at. That's another question, can he do his time somewhere else? I don't know when or if I'll hear from my friend again soon, but I would like to help him if I do hear from him. Things have happened in his life that have really screwed him up and he needs a chance to get back on his feet again after he does whatever time he needs to do. Please help.

Re: On the run

He may well be happier if he gets this behind him and gets himself off the street. Lawyers aren't free and he will need to hire one if he wants to proceed with the least amount of punishment.
