Legal Question in Criminal Law in Texas
shoplifting a misdemeanor
how long does the court have to officially bring charges to a defendant in shoplifting cases? i have been told it would take a year
i am thinking the court has a specific amount of time to do this. i know it has to go before a grand jury first and they have up to four months to decide to go to trial or no bill the defendant

Re: shoplifting a misdemeanor
In Texas all misdemeanors must be filed in within two years from the date the offense was committed. If the amount you were shoplifting exceeded $1,500 then it would be considered a felony and the State would have up to 3 years to take it to a grand jury and obtain an indictment.
