theft arrest

I forgot to pay for fishing line that I had put in my pocket so I could carry my other purchases. I distracted aat check out because I had my friend with me who is handicapped and needs help to make his purchases. I was stopped by store secuity and the police were called and Iwas arrested fo theft under 50.00 . The fhishing line in question was marked for sale for

$ 2.99 Ihave no record or prior arrest at age 49. What do I do to keep my record clean solve this misunderstanding.

you can try to work it out with the store and the DA. You can take the case to trial and get on the stand and tell your story, and hopefully the jury will understand. To be convicted of theft, the state must prove that you had the intent to steal. Taking something on accident is not theft. Worst case scenario, you can take a deferred on the Class C theft, you can get that expunged off your record after you have finished it.
