Legal Question in Criminal Law in Texas

I was ticketed for Assault by Contact... Class C misdemeanor in Texas. I have pleaded Not Guilty. The DA is saying I cannot be given a public defender because I am not facing any jail time. I have not been arrested or read my Miranda rights, so apparently that means I don't have rights, but I am facing a criminal offense. I don't understand how this is legal? They keep saying it is like a traffic ticket, but unlike a traffic ticket, I would have to list it as a misdemeanor conviction on a job application. What do I do?

The DA is actually correct. You are not afforded an appointed lawyer unless your freedom is at risk, ie. facing jail time. However, you are correct as well that a class C assault conviction even though it is a minor offense, could potentially affect future employment and housing opportunities. Many lawyers, including myself, represent people in your situation and in your area. It would be worth the money to hire a lawyer to prevent a conviction from occurring.
