Is it possible to get more "time" if you appeal a sentencing?

Yes, there is a case going on in Houston right now where a woman convicted of stabbing her husband to death got her 20 or 25 year sentence reversed and is having the punishment redone at the risk of getting life on the second go-round.
If some cases, it is prohibited, where there is no jury and a higher sentence could be shown to be vindictiveness on the part of the prosecutor or the Court.
