when the victims statements conflicts with the defendants confession, should that have prompted the defense counsel to further investigate the case ?

On its face, without any other factors, the answer to your question is yes. The reality is that there could be many reasons for the defendant's counsel to have handled this differently. One reality is that counsel did investigate, and the answers did not benefit the defendant. Only the attorney involved can truly answer the question.
