The police may first try to interview him to get his "side of the story". They will then write a report and present the case to the prosecutors' office in your county. If they accept charges, a warrant will issue and he will either be arrested or make a no-arrest bond. A bond will be set based on his prior criminal record and the charge (which is a felony level.) He will then have to hire a lawyer unless he is indigent - then the court will appoint a lawyer to represent him. He will make appearances in court in which his lawyer will try to get the case dismissed and try to work it out. The case will be presented to a grand jury for indictment. (Some times this happens before the warrant issues. The prosecutor takes the charges to the grand jury and if the grand jury indicts, then the prosecutor gets a warrant.) The prosecutor will contact you during the pendency of the case to determine what happened, how it happened, and your actual loss. The prosecutor will also likely ask for your in put on punishment although they do not follow it without discretion. If you bf is a first offender, he will likely receive probation - which would actually be good for you because he would be required to make restitution payments as a condition of probation.
