Legal Question in Discrimination Law in Texas

Slander

I am a supervisor at a hospital. A hospital employee has been telling other employees that I am a racist. I am white, the employee is black. I am concerned that the hospital did not act quickly enough to address the situation and that the damage to my reputation has been done.

Two black employees have come to me (seperately) to let me know that they were told that I am a racist by the individual. The two employees do not believe this and wanted to help by telling me that this was happening.

I reported this incident to my director and to Human Resources immediately. My director waited 8 days to talk to the individual about this. The individual denied saying that I was a racist per my director.

I am concerned that the individual has told others at my place of employment that I am a racist and that this falsehood has damaged my reputation and earning potential. Do I have any legal recourse? Thanks in advance for your consideration.

Re: Slander

Sounds like you may have a case for defamatory slander; however, you will have to show proof of damages, or that the statement is actionable per se. Otherwise, no recovery may be possible. Another tort you may want to consider is Publicity in a False Light.
