1st Court Appearance for DWI
Do I have to have an attorney to ask the judge for more time to find an attorney who specializes in DWI defense?

Based on what you have written, generally the courts will allow you a reset to retain an attorney. You need to be prepared to fully talk about all of the events that lead up to and through your DWI allegations. If my local criminal defense law firm can assist you with this legal issue or any other legal matter, please contact my paralegal Tina ([email protected]) to arrange for an initial consultation.

I am not sure I understand your question. If you have a first appearance setting, and do not have a lawyer, the court will normally grant you another 30 days to find a lawyer that you want to retain. If you have a court-appointed attorney, it is not likely that the judge will change your attorney, simply to provide one more experienced. If you have a court-appointed attorney, and want more time to hire your own lawyer, that is usually allowed as well. In the counties I practice in, it is rare for the first appearance setting to be a substantive proceeding.
