Legal Question in DUI Law in Texas

Arkansas DWI...Texas Charges

To whom it may concern,

I received a DWI in the state of Arkansas on December 2nd, 2007. I have a TX drivers license, but live in Arkansas. Since my arrest, I have taken care of the charges, been to court, and have paid the fines. Almost a year later, (9/22/08), I received a letter from the Texas Department of Public Safety stating that I owe $1040.00 to the Driver Responsibility Program.

Do I have to pay this? Secondly, is my TX license valid? I have completed all of the requirements of the state of AR, but who knows about Texas.

Reading the fine print indicates that I will have to pay this for three years. Are they crazy? I have already paid thousands of dollars to the state of Arkansas and now they want me to give Texas $3120.00 over three years.

Thanks for your help

Re: Arkansas DWI...Texas Charges

In order to maintain your license in Texas you may have to pay surcharges for 3 years -- especially depending upon the manner of the Arkansas resolution.

If your license is suspended in Tx for failure to pay the surcharges, you will not be able to get an Arkansas license -- so make sure you handle the Texas situation carefully.
