If you suspect/know that your child may have a learning
disability, he/she can be assessed free of
charge by your local public school.
Put your request in writing. Ask for a
"complete special education evaluation " to
determine if your child is eligible for special
education programs and services. If your child
has any disability that impacts his or her
ability to benefit from his/her educational
setting than an assessment by the public school
system should take place. Your child may be
eligible under the IDEA (Individuals with
Disabilities Education Act) or under Section 504
of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Our public
schools systems are mandated by both State and
Federal law to seek and serve children with
disabilities in the educational system. If your
local school system's "child find" mandate failed
to address your child's needs you may pursue
identification and services by making a request
in writing to your local school district.
