Legal Question in Entertainment Law in Texas
How are mix tapes not a violation of copyrights?
I was wondering how people are able to create a "mix tape" and seemingly not have to give credit or money to any artist/label that they used in creating the tape. Do you have to change a certain amount of the song for it to become yours? If that's true, how do people legally sell those tapes of songs on TV? I would like to get some of my mixes distributed, but I want to make sure I don't infringe on any copyright, patent, or trademark issues.

They are a violation if not licensed. Go to ASCAP and BMI and get a license. Licenses are not expensive. Then you are legal. That is how it is done.
