Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

I am a 45 year old woman living with my male significant other in Texas. I am not listed on any legal documents/utility bills of any kind that relate to my current address. We share no credit card accounts or bank accounts. The only expense we share in both names is our auto insurance. I pay him monthly 'rent' with no legal agreement signed. Should we split, how do I obtain a rental history when I have nothing to show? I want to protect myself and my teen son (from previous marriage) should something happen. What can I do?

"Rental history" documentation could vary between persons who require such information.

I assume you would want rental history to show to a potential future landlord.

A few suggestions to prove rental history would included:

1. State paying rent to your significant other via check, that way you can use canceled check copies or carbon copies of the checks to show a history of rent payment,

2. You could get a letter from your current landlord acknowledging that you lived at your current location and that you were a good tenant,

3. You could get a letter from your neighbors acknowledging that you lived at your current location and that you were a good neighbor,

4. You could start keeping envelopes of items mailed to you to prove you have lived at the current location.

In summary the options are endless. If you have a specific legal issue you should consult an attorney for a more in-depth analysis of you issues.
