I read on the internet that you can be considered divorced if you abandon your marriage for 3 yrs. Is that true and what are the responsibilities?

No it isn't true.

There is some language regarding failure to file a divorce after a common-law marriage which may be your issue -- it is in the Texas Family Code, which is available online.
