It's complicated. The age of majority is 18. Runaway however, is a status offense under the Juvenile Justice Code, and is applicable only to persons under the age of 17. Once a person turns 17, they are treated under the criminal statutes of the Penal Code. IF a kid's residence is not governed by prior court orders of any jurisdiction, then a 17 year old can leave home and not be a runaway. IF the kid reports their current address to their parents and/or cops, they will not be termed a missing person. The issues are complicated, but that is the short, general version.
