Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

Arranged marriage

I am asking for a young friend who is being forced into an arranged marriage by her parents. She is a U.S. citizen (lives in Texas) and when she turns 18 she is to be given an engagement ring from a guy from India who recently moved to the U.S. She is totally against this and wants out but is not sure how to get out of it. She is supposed to inherit a large sum of money but will probably be disinherited if she doesn't follow through. She is also going to be moving to India after the marriage. Is there a way to avoid this marriage such as protection from the U.S. government? She is thinking of running away but is sort of afraid of her father. Thanks.

Re: Arranged marriage

The day she turns 18 she is free to do whatever she wants since she is an adult.

Of course, her family is free to disinherit her.

Marriages are controlled by the states. Marriage is NOT a federal issue.

A person cannot be forced to marry someone in Texas.

Good luck!
