Can an attorney withdraw from a case while the case is still pending?

Yes, but the attorney has to have the permission of the court. The client or the opposing party could object. Typically, if it is close to trial, the judge will not let the attorney out, but otherwise, it will be approved. Some judges are more strict than others. Unless a trial is scheduled and imminent, the judge will usually let the attorney out if the client has failed to pay the attorney or if the client and the attorney cannot communicate of have differing ideas about how to handle the case.
