Do you have to go through your attorneys office to hire a investigator for your case?

No. The investigator certainly doesn't care; if you give him the $1500 up front, he doesn't care whether or not you tell your lawyer.
But why would you go behind your lawyer's back and do this? Usually, the purpose of such an investigation is to get evidence in a form that's admissible in Court. You want your lawyer on board for this.
