birth certificates
my son is having his first child with his girlfriend in August of next year, due to them not being married, can the child have my son's last name on their birth certificate

First, I recommend that you do DNA testing when the child is born.
Second, you can fill out paperwork at the hospital in front of an approved staff person, your name can be on the birth certificate.
Third, if the gf won't agree, you can file for paternity through the courts and get child support, visitation and a name change handled.

There is no reason not to, but that will be the birth mother's ultimate decision.
