Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

I have been in care and custody of a relative since she was 9 months old. She was born in Alabama. The child's biological mother is my cousin and the biological father is unknown (one night stand). My cousin asked me to help her with the child by taking the child with me and providing care for the child. I live in Texas. I agreed to help and brought the child with me to Texas along with a host of notarized legal documents. Recently, my cousin asked me if I could adopt the child. I want to adopt her but I don't have money to retain a lawyer and furthermore, I have no clue what the necessary steps are to begin the adoption process. Will I have to go to Alabama to begin the adoption process or can I do it here in Texas? Will I have to go through the complete process, since I've had custody of the child for four years? Any help would be great.

As long as the child has resided in Texas for more than 6 months the adoption would be in Texas. Any adoption would involve your cousin signing away her parental rights to the child or the court terminating your cousin's rights. She can consent which makes it easier. However, you will need an attorney to help you through the process. If you can't pay for an attorney at all you can contact legal aid in your area for assistance.
