Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

career assets

I divorced 15 years ago. When we were married in 1980, he was a college student, then went on to medical school and residency in Houston, Tx. We divorced when he was a doing his residency in Cardiology. I would like to know if I can get career assets, as I help put him through school.

Re: career assets

15 years later?? I'm sure you've heard of stale claims and statutes of limitation. That's where this claim would fall. The value of his career assets would be determined as of the date of the divorce - which for a residency wasn't much, but that's all there is. Sorry.

Re: career assets

No. Texas courts do not place a value on a degree or license.

The court divided the assets and debts that existed at the time of the divorce and that order is final. Everything acquired after the divorce is the property of the person who acquired it and a former spouse has no claim to it.
