Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

change to child custody

My fiance has a 6 year old son and is the noncustodial parent. His ex-wife lives in the subdivision next to ours (around 1 mile door to door). How difficult would it be to change the custody to joint, and what steps would need to be taken?
