Change Child's last name

Can I change my son's last name without the father? He has not been in my son's life and now I would like to have my son adopted when I get married.

Changing the child's name is not the same as a termination; and termination of the father's parental rights are necessary before there can be a stepparent adoption. Both a name change and a termination require notice to the biological father. Additionally, these are not actions that are undertaken well by laymen. Consult with a lawyer.
