Legal Question in Family Law in Texas
name change
I got married in Jan 2000 and didn't change my name, now that we have kids, I would like to hyphenate my name (to include his). Can I still take my marriage license to the DMV to get a new driver's license and then go on to the SS office or do I have to do something else since several years have passed? Thanks

Re: name change
I researched your question. Here's the info from the Driver's License website:

3) I have recently married. How long do I have to change the name on my license? Can I change my name online?
You are required to notify the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) of a name change within 30 days. A fee is required. Name changes cannot be processed online. In order to change your name, you must apply at any Texas Driver License office and present your marriage certificate/license or court order to initiate the change. No name will be used that has not been previously documented . In all cases, documented proof of name change shall be presented. 37 Texas Administrative Code 15.23 , 37 Texas Administrative Code 15.36, Texas Transportation Code 521.054.
So, it would seem you can not get a new driver's license.

I need to change or correct the name on my Social Security card. How do I do this?

I think you will need to do a separate name change case. Contact an attorney or file a petition with the District Clerk in your County.
Thanks for your question.
