Legal Question in Family Law in Texas
changing name for social security after common law marriage
My fiance and I have been together for almost 5 years. We now have a 6 month old son. We decided to get married, but don't have a lot of money with a new baby and only one of us working. We are considering registering with our county courhouse as common law married. Do I receive a marriage certificate to send to Social Security to change my name with? Or what would I use instead to get that accomplished? I want to be sure that I will be able to legally use my husband's last name with all government agencies, etc.

Re: changing name for social security after common law marriage
If you register your marriage, then you are married. It would not be considered common law. You would then send social security proof of your marriage and name change.
If you need anything else, you can call me at 713-847-6000 if you live in the Houston area.
Best of luck.
