Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

Cheap divorce

If both parties are in agreement in the custody of children and the division of assets is a quick and inexpensive option like divorcewriter a good way to go? I am the primary parent the kids live with me, and I am keeping the house. But I do not want for custody problems to arise a couple of years down the road. Neither one of us have 3K for a retainer avliable.

Re: Cheap divorce

No! Not in a case with children. I have not seen any of the "quick and inexpensive" options that really work. Even when you agree on custody, visitation, and support you need someone who knows what they are doing to give you an enforceable order. I have had several cases where the parent ended up paying me more to try to fix the problems that had arisen due to a poorly written decree than they would have paid me to do the divorce for them in the first place. There are bound to be divorce attorneys in your area that will handle an uncontested divorce with kids for less than $3K. I will and I know I'm not the only one in this area who does.

Re: Cheap divorce

At the risk of sounding self serving... Noooo! Do not do your own divorce if there are children involved.

You can get a lawyer to draw up the papers based on your agreement with your spouse. If there is 100% agreement on all of the issues in the divorce you can get it done by a competent attorney for significantly less than 3K. If you are seriously broke, call Legal Aid and have one of their attorneys handle your divorce.

Re: Cheap divorce

I've seen over a dozen on-line kits from states like CA, FL, CO, NY and WA. They were NOT designed for Texas divorces.

In Harris County the judges hate them and won't sign the final decree.

I sell Do It Yourself divorce kits. My kits were designed for Harris County but can be used anywhere in Texas.

If you aren't in Harris County, I won't have any of your county's local forms.

I sell all TX forms you need and include an employer withholding order, medical child support order, etc

Each kit is designed for your situation. I fill in all the information.

Price is $500. Then you pay the county filing fee.
