at what age can a child be left at home without an adult for hours that you work or anything else

There is no statutory age. It is fluid, and dependent upon the age and maturity of the child, as well as the circumstances (e.g. a neighbor on watch, cell phone, grandparents etc., time alone, time of day alone). Generally speaking, any child younger than 10 years would be suspected of incapable of care without an adult.
