Legal Question in Family Law in Texas
Child custody case and use of an attorney
I will soon have to retain a laywer for a child custody case. I live in Tampa, Florida. After a paternity test it has been proven that I am the father of a 4 month old boy living in Houston Texas. The mother of the child is married and also has a 2.5 year old daughter with her husband. My question is can I retain a lawyer in Tampa Florida or will I have to contact someone on Houston to retain services? Or if I can choose either, what is your recommendation on what will best serve my needs? Thank you.

If the child is in Houston, Texas, then Harris County, Texas has jurisdiction over the child.
You can always hire a lawyer licensed in both states, if you can find one.
It will probably be cheaper to hire a Houston, Texas attorney.

Rarely is a question this clear cut. You absolutely need a Texas attorney. If you use only an attorney in Florida, then the other side can run up your expenses trremendously just by scheduling hearings frequently. You cannot compete with that.
Also, it is not likely that you will find a Florida attorney who is licensed in Texas.
Finally, Florida law is different from Texas law. You need someone who will be readily conversant with YOUR particular case.
You can have a Florida attorney also, but that would probably just be a wasted expenditure.
