Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

Child custody

I have 2 sons, ages 9 and 3. Their mother and I were never legally married. I have had both sons full time for the past 2 years. I want to obtain legal custody. I do not have money for a lawyer and doubt very highly that the mother will even show in court for a hearing. Is there a way to petition for custody without a lawyer representing me? Their mother is unstable in work and housing. She ues drugas and has a suicide attempt in the last year. Thank you
