Legal Question in Family Law in Texas
child support
I have a child with a woman that I never married. I have always paid for her child care, insurance and child support when I could. At one point the child lived with me for seven years because her mother could not take care of her. Also, there was an age difference I was 20 and she was 36 if that makes a difference. Since then I have always seen my daughter and up until recently Have struggled on child support payments due to medical problems my current wife incurred. I need help in the since that I don't want to have to lose my income tax refund and wind up having to pay more then what I should. I received a call from the Texas Attorney Generals Office wanting to meet with me to try and ''negotiate'' out of court with a paternity test. I know that if my ex decides to through all kinds of lies it would be my word against hers right? What can I do to protect myself? I have documentation showing that I have paid for her insurance and child support. One other thing in those seven years that she lived with me her mother never paid me for child support and she would claim her on her income tax every year during that time. Is this wrong? How do I go about in protecting my self?

Re: child support
Guard your documentation carefully. Be ready to prove that the child lived with you for 7 years. Get an attorney to to the negotiation with you. It could save you a lot of money. The AG's office is not interested in helping you - they are working for their interests on behalf of the mother.
