Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

child visitation/ abandonment

I have been trying to locate my 4 year old son for almost two years, my ex girlfriend married a military man and moved, I was unable to find him, I have proof web detectives, local private investagators etc, which shows I have been looking for him. She has filed a case stating I abandoned my son and would like to terminate my parental rights. I have a court date set for July 15 in Del Rio TX. Do I need an attorney to accompany me to this hearing?

I urge you to hire an attorney. If you can't get one at such late date. Show up.

When you show up -- you should be dressed like you were going to court -- no shorts, no baseball caps, no thongs. Look neat and clean.

You should bring the following with you -- You should prepare a document called "an Answer" along with the proof that you have showing that you've been trying to find them.

The Answer document must contain your name, your signature, your phone numbers and your permanent mailing address.

You should make at least 3 copies - one for the ocurt's file, one set for you, one set for the mother's attorney and one set for the attorney appointed to represent the child's interest.

Have the court "stamp" each copy with the date the court received the document.

Have everything stapled so that no pages get "lost".

Good luck!
