how old do children have to be before they are allowed to choose who is to be their guardian.

18 year old. If this is a guardianship, then the determination is made by the judge in Probate Court. If it a question of conservatorship, then the judge in Family Court decides what is in the child's best interest. In Family Court, the child can advise the court of their preference if they are 12 or older.
