college

I am a college student thinking of going into law. What would be the best major for me to choose to get me headed in the right direction? I am primarily interested in family law.

Re: college

Get good grades so that you can get accepted into law school.

Buy books on the LSAT. Take an LSAT prep. class.

Work or volunteer at a family law office to see if it is really what you want to do.

I strongly urge you to select a school that you can afford. I keep meeting new lawyers with student loans around $100,000 - they can't afford their monthly payments.

Intern in a family law court.

Volunteer at a woman's center for domestic abuse.

Learn how to stay detached when you are involved in very emotional situations. Our office has lost several young lawyers that could not emotionally handle women going back to very abusive husbands.

Take classes on mediation, conflict resolution, etc.

Talk to family law attorneys and judges.

Major in something that you can make a living doing while you are attending law school.

Learn about addictions - from alcohol to drugs.

I have a business background. Another attorney in my office has a social work background.

Using common sense is very helpful in family law.

Good luck!
