Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

community property divorce, gifts, etc.

My ex and I are doing our own divorce and he has owned a house for 20 years prior to me knowing him. He's dragging his feet because he says he wants a 'quitform'. I thought since it's community property state it automatically belongs to him. I left nearly two years ago after he violently kicked me out, throwing things at me. I had to find an apartment right away. Also, he gave me a gift check prior to the marriage and he's asking for that money back. He told me I did not need to pay him back for it. Is he entitled to that money? He is also asking for the engagment ring back. I told him I was going to sell it to pay bills and divorce expenses. Do I have to give it back or money for it I receive? Thanks for your help. Also, I did a large amount of remodeling and physical labor to redecorate and restore his house, is there any 'sweat equity' credit to bargain with here?

Thank you.

You are asking specific, technical legal questions. Usually these are questions that people ask their lawyers when they are not "doing their own divorce".
