Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

I have contacted the AG's office about a case that has had arrears from 1998. I got a printout of what has been paid toward arrears and what interest has been charged. It seemed like the interest amount never changed when the new Texas law went into effect in Jan 2002 to change from 12% to 6%. When I called today to ask what the interest rate they were charging me was, they told me 12% still to this day. I mentioned to them about it changing in 2002 from 12% to 6% and they said yes that is true and they will schedule a meeting for me to meet with them but that changing it to 6% might show me oweing more than what I owe now on it while accruing 12%.......... Hello, I am totally confused. Is this in fact any way correct? What actions should I take?

Look carefully at Texas Family Code section 157.265. I can't tell from your question how this statute applies in your case. But it's easy to read. See how it applies to your case and see if you think you are due a break.

If you can't make heads or tails of it, I would urge you to invest in a consultation with a good family law attorney who can review the orders and your payment record to determine whether the AG is handling your case properly.

Good luck!!
