Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

Such i continue to pay?

My husband of 6 yrs has ask for us to separate we will more than likely get divorced. Anyway our lease is up at the end of May and since it was unexpected my son, MY HUSBAND and i will be staying till then. My question is am i still obligated to pay for half of the utilities and monthly bills... i am pay anything that is solely in my name but anything just in his name i have refused to pay the reason for this is that am going to need to save up my money so that at the end of May i'll be able to find some place new. I will be seeking legal counsel but in the mean time our bills are due. What could happened to me in the future if i don't pay half of the utilities?

Re: Such i continue to pay?

The most important thing you have to remember is that neither divorce nor separation alters the right of your creditors. When it comes to debts or any other obligations to pay money (ex - your lease) you remain obligated to pay if your name is on the account. If you refuse to pay, this may be reported to the credit reporting agencies and this will ruin your credit - possibly making it difficult to get credit at a future date or - and this is important - to lease another apartment in your own name. Feel free to contact me when you are ready to retain the services of a lawyer. Good luck.
