Well, you need to make sure you weren't "served" by publication. Just because you don't have any papers doesn't mean the court does not consider you to have been served.

Assuming you have not been served in any way (personally, by publication, or by alternate service), you are not required to appear for the court hearing.

Most counties have a website for the District Clerk's office where you should be able to discern whether the Court's file indicates service, of some variety, has occurred.
