Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

cruelty to spouse?

My wife has filed for divorce and cited ''cruelty'' as the cause. We argued about money, but I never was *cruel* to her - never laid a hand on her, and always respected her boundaries. The actual divorce petition is not totally unfair, and I was condsidering agreeing to it without amendments, until a friend told me that the ''cruelty'' clause could come back to haunt me -- affect whether I get a job or credit in the future. Should I take this to a local attorney?

Re: cruelty to spouse?

Cruelty is often a standard legal term used as a ground for divorce.

That said, do not do this on your own, even if you are agreeable. Get a lawyer to make sure that the terms you agree to are in fact the terms in the decree.

I agree with Theresa here - you should really have an attorney assist you in this process to make sure you know what you're getting into. You have no idea how many people I see who regret the agreement they entered into because they didn't realize the significance of the terms of the agreement.

If you would like to discuss your case further, please do not hesitate to contact my office for a free phone consultation.
