Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

Custodial Parent brought step son to live w/ us, wants him back for $$$.

My step son's mother was having problems with step-son's behavior and brought the child to live with us. She enrolled him in school w/ our address and contact info as him primary address. I have applied for Food Stamps and to get step son's Medicaid... now she wants to come get step son because she's going to lose her Food Stamps, TANF, SSI, Child Support, etc... and will pull child out of school to do so. Step son is scared to death that she's going to come get him. We know that we can say ''no'' and violate court order to keep him... can we get a Temporary Restraining Order to keep her from being able to pick him up from school? Is there anything we can do that is not going to cost us a retainer fee of $1500 for such a hard case? We both work and are willing to make payments, but Legal Aid doesn't take cases regarding custody.. we could make payments, just very hard to come up with $1500 lump sum. Help or advice much appreciated.

The retainer is based upon the attorney doing most of the hard work up front -- TRO, Petition, etc. But, I have split the retainer - 1/2 now, 1/2 in 30 days. Keep shopping, but be comfortable that your getting a good representation.
