Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

Custody and adoption

I am seeking permanent custody of my 11 year old niece. Her mother and father are on drugs and out of the picture. My niece has been living with my father since September 2008. He is now having trouble and cannot support her. I have had temp guardianship when she was younger. Now my husband and I are seeking permanent guardianship and adoption but I do not know where to start. I do not have funds for a lawyer and I am hoping I can do all of this on my own without a lawyer. Please help. I live in Hunt county, Tx.

Re: Custody and adoption

I'm not trying to sound harsh, but the fact you do not even know the difference between guardianship and custody makes the odds of you successfully obtaining what you want without an attorney very unlikely. In the best of situations, terminations and adoptions are difficult. Have you inquired about legal aid? Many family law attorneys will take payment plans.
