Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

Can Custody and Child Support be determined outside of court?

I live in Ohio and the mother lives in Texas. The baby is due in a couple of weeks. We have never been married, but we have a great relationship as friends. Can we make a ''contract'', written or verbal, about Custody and child support without lawyers and/or court intervention? Do I need to retain a lawyer for my protection? I plan on being there sometime shortly after the birth, would this be a good time to find a lawyer? What do I need to do in order to establish paternity in the State of Texas?

Re: Can Custody and Child Support be determined outside of court?

You should seek legal counsel now in the county where the mother resides. If she lives in Tarrant County (Fort Worth), Dallas, Denton or in Wise County, you will find my office conveniently near DFW Airport. Matters of paternity, custody, visitation and long distance visitation, support and the like are technical and require professional advice. I suppose you could build your own house or build your own car or amputate your own foot were it caught in a trap, and if you wanted to take the time and effort to handle the matter by yourself, making all the same mistakes that generally attend the first time anyone tackles a new task, you are free to do so, but you can expect a steep learning curve with a more time, effort and energy spent than you would spend in hiring a lawyer and having the job done right the first time. Did I mention how expensive it can be if you do not get it right the first time and have to have someone else fix broken decrees? If your papers are not correctly prepared or do not properly address your situation, it can expensive to fix.
