Custody & Separation
If my spouse and I separate amicably, how can I keep my spouse from possibly claiming custody of my children at a later date?

Take good care of the children, provide a safe and happy home and don't give them reason to change their minds about where they want to live after they turn ten. Don't give her a reason to try to take them away from you. Have child support ordered, because if she gets behind it is not so likely she will want to return to court. Keep good evidence where it is not likely to be taken away by her (photographs of you helping the kids with homework, of you with the kids at play, etc...) Join something like Texas Fathers for Equal Rights and learn how they do things. Go to the library and read a couple of books on child custody fights and keep in mind the type of evidence you would need if it comes to that. Be a reasonable parent with respect to her visitation and access with the kids. If she ever screws up, keep good records and evidence of the screwups.
