Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

deadbeat dad

My brother-in-law says he is a deadbeat dad from Texas. And he is telling his mother, my mother-in-law that if she knows where he is or how to contact him, that her home can be siezed by the athorities for past child support payments. I don't believe that to be a true statement. Please clarify.

Regards,

WJ

Re: deadbeat dad

You are correct.

Your mother-in-law's property is not subject to seizure for his debts, even child support.

Re: deadbeat dad

If the father is an adult (over the age of 18), then he is liable for his own debts.

If he is the co-owner of the home with his mother, that could be a problem for her.

If son and mother have no assets together (such as joint bank accounts, savings accounts, stocks and bonds, etc.) then she is safe.
