Debts aquired before marriage
If I marry someone that has a past due child support account and medical bills aquired before we married can I in any way be held liable for those debts in Texas??

Re: Debts aquired before marriage
Technically no.
However, I would not file a joint tax return since all refunds will be held by the IRS for past due child support.
I'd also never own anything with him.
Never open a bank account with him.
The Texas Attorney General can garnish bank accounts if his social security number appears on the account.
Also, when he retires, social security will take money out from his check to pay any past due child support.
When he dies, his estate will still owe the mother any unpaid child support.
Child support is NOT dischargeable through bankruptcy.
Before you marry, I would seriously think about your life with this man. His separate property debts are definately going to affect your marriage.
His child support comes first before you and any children you might have with him in the future.
The courts feel that you and he knew that he had other children and a financial obligation to them if you decide to have children of your own.
