Re: Definition of possessory conservator and managing conservator

Your question came under a heading of "Family law, divorce, child sustody and adoption," but the word "conservator" is not used in that context in Maryland law. A conservator is defined in the Estates and Trusts Article of the Maryland Code as "a person appointed or qualified by a court to act as general, limited, or temporary guardian of a minor's property or a person legally authorized to perform subsantially the same function." The Code does not define "possessory" or "managing" conservators, but presumably the court may indicate the limits on a conservator's powers, which may be simply to hold (possess) the property until the minor reaches a designated age or may manage the property, if the property is a kind which requires management (investments, real estate, etc.)
