What is the difference between joint custody and 50 /51

No such thing as 50/51. Joint custody is where both parties have equal custody of the child EXCEPT that one makes the major decisions such as medical. The child can live 50 / 50 at the two households IF the school district (or education situation) is the same. OR, if different school districts, then one parent is designated as the one to establish the household for the child and have the majority of the possession of the child.
