Legal Question in Family Law in Texas
Is there really a Divorce Decree out there????
I have not seen or heard from my husband in 20yrs.
I heard from others a long time ago that he got a
divorce without me having to sign or receive any papers.
I have no idea when or where so how would I get a
copy of the divorce if I do not know that info???
Thanks.

At this time, Texas is just beginning to set up a state registry. You can call the Texas Department of Health, Bureau of Vital Statistics (BVS) at 512-458-7372. Their fax number is 512-458-7783. They might be able to help you if it was in the last few years.
If it occurred many years ago, it is a real pain.
You must go to the county you think he divorced you in and check. In other words, you must go county to county looking to see if a divorce was granted.
In Harris County, Charles Bacarrise the District Clerk's office can help you. They are located on the first floor of the county civil courthouse at the corner of San Jacinto and Congress - across the street from the old criminal courthouse. One of their phone numbers is 713-755-5758. If they don't know, ask them what phone number to call for the Harris County District Clerk.
If you have any other questions, you can call me at 713-847-6000. If you live in the Houston area, I offer a free phone consultation.
