Legal Question in Family Law in Texas
Divorce
I am looking to file for divorce from my husband this summer.
I currently have my green card here in the states as I was originally born in France. Have worked here in the states for years.
The man I am married to has a mental disorder, doesn't work (I have to support him) he has been physically abusive to me at the point I have had to call the police and he in turn has been committed to a local mental facility.
My question is this. We have no children, no assets, am I going to need an immigration lawyer that specializes in divorce or can I just file divorce myself?

Re: Divorce
It does not sound like you will need an imigration lawyer, however, I think it would be a good idea for you to call one to see if the divorce could affect your status. Also, since your husband is in a mental health facility, this may not be as simple as it sounds so you should speak with a divorce attorney as well.
Re: Divorce
As a lawyer, I don't mind telling people that they can do the job themselves if they know how or want to invest the time and effort to figure out how to do it. Many people do just that. If you don't have the time to learn how to file the right papers, arrange for a hearing before the judge, make sure all documents are in legal order and have the case set for final hearing and obtain the judge's signature on the order, then you might want an experienced attorney to do the job for you.

Is your green card conditional? If so, do not do this yourself, get a lawyer.
