Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

When is divorce final?

My husband filed for divorce. I never signed any paperwork nor did I (or he)receive anything to show that the divorce was finalized. How can I see if we are legally divorced?

To follow up to Paul's answer.

You can get a copy of anything in the file.

You need to ask for a "certified copy" - approx. $1 per page - varies county to county.

If you have any questions after looking at the file, you need to take the copies to an attorney to review.

I also recommend that you file an "answer" to let the court know your address and that you are "interested" in being an active participant in this divorce.

If you don't do anything and you have been "served", then he can get a "default" divorce without your knowledge.

If you are in the Houston area, please feel free to call me at 713-847-6000.

Please be advised that I will be attending the Family Law Seminar in San Antonio next week and will be unavailable until August 13th.

The easiest thing to do is look at the petition's heading, go to that court, ask for the jacket, and look inside. All papers filed and/or entered by the court will be in that jacket. If a final decree was entered, the court's copy will be there.
