Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

Divorce

In 1968 my husband divorced me, from another town but still in Texas....we had 4 children...I did not attend any legal proceedings they simply sent me the divorce....in this document much of the information is incorrect, childrens names birthdates, one child not even encluded....other incorrect information. . I raised my children alone with no support, etc....however upon retiring I was again looking at this document and it occured to me that it possibly isn't a legal instrument . . how can I find out ? If it is not can I collect SS on his record, at present I only have mine which is nothing but they based it on the dates and I lacked a few months being within the 10 year law. .

Re: Divorce

You might be entitled to ss from your husband depending on how long you were married to him before divorcing him. You will need to talk to social security to see how long you need to have been married for their rule to apply.

You might be able to get the legal document on-line these days. You need to go to the county that the divorce took place and order a CERTIFIED COPY of the FINAL DECREE OF DIVORCE. You or any person can order a CERTIFIED COPY since they are public records unless (rarely done) the records was sealed.

If you were not legally divorced, then you are still married. If he is dead, then you would be his widow and again might qualify for his ss benefits.
